Mario Kart is zooming into mobile.
Nintendo of America is developing a new mobile game based on the beloved racing series. Dubbed Mario Kart Tour, the new mobile app is slated to arrive at some point “in the fiscal year ending in March 2019,” the company announced on Twitter.
“The checkered flag has been raised and the finish line is near,” Nintendo of America wrote. “A new mobile application is now in development: Mario Kart Tour!”
At this point, that’s all we know about the game. Interest in the new mobile title is sure to be high, though, given the popularity of the Mario Kart series.
Nintendo first announced plans to develop mobile games in 2015 and has released four to date: Miitomo arrived in 2016, followed by Super Mario Run the same year, then Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Picket Camp in 2017. The company is also reportedly developing a Legend of Zelda mobile game.
Miitomo was a success off the bat, securing more than 10 million users just a month after launch, but Nintendo last week announced plans to shut down Miitomo on May 9.
Nintendo also announced that a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros is in development. Nintendo is partnering on the upcoming movie with Illumination, the California-based production studio behind the Despicable Me franchise and Minions. There’s no word yet as to when it will be released.
